A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) happens when water builds up in a lake at the base of a mountain that is covered in ice, like a glacier. When the water builds up too much because of melting glaciers or heavy rain, it can cause the lake to overflow. This can make a huge flood of water which rushes down the mountain, sometimes taking everything in its path with it. People living near these mountains can be in serious danger from GLOFs.
