Grassing (textiles)

Grassing is basically a way of making fabric look like it has little pieces of grass or other stuff sticking out of it. Imagine you're playing in the park on a sunny day and you roll around on the grass. Bits of grass and dirt and other things might get stuck to your clothes and make them look more interesting. Grassing is kind of like that, but done on purpose!

To make grassing happen, people use a special machine that has a bunch of little needles sticking out of it. They put the fabric on a table and run the machine over it, and the needles poke little holes in the fabric. Then they take some little bits of cotton or other fibers and push them through the holes with the machine. Finally, they trim off any pieces that stick out too far or look too messy.

When they're done, the fabric looks like it has little patches of grass or whatever other fibers they used sticking out of it. Sometimes they might do this all over the fabric, and sometimes they might just do it in certain spots to make a design. It can make fabrics like blankets and rugs look more interesting and cozy, like you're wrapped up in a warm pile of grass on a cold day!
