ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Great Ape research ban

Imagine you have a very smart and strong friend named Ape who looks almost like a human but isn't one. Scientists often like to study animals like Ape to learn more about them and their behavior, but sometimes they do things to Ape that might hurt him or make him unhappy.

To make sure that Ape and his friends are not being hurt or treated badly, some people made a rule called the Great Ape Research Ban. This means that scientists are not allowed to do certain things to Ape or his friends, like hurting them, keeping them in cages that are too small, or doing experiments that make them unhappy.

Just like a grown-up might make rules to make sure that you and your friends are safe and happy, other grown-ups made this rule to protect animals like Ape. So now we can all be sure that Ape and his friends can live their lives in peace and without being hurt, and we can still learn cool things about them by watching them from a distance or using cameras or other tools that don't harm them.
