ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Halotolerance

Halotolerance is a big word that means how well something can tolerate salt. To explain it like you are five years old, let's pretend that salt is like a monster. Some things are scared of the monster (salt), and some things are not.

For example, think about plants. Some plants need a lot of water, but they can't handle too much salt. If they drink water that has too much salt in it (like in the ocean), they will get sick and might even die. Those plants are not very halotolerant.

But there are other plants (like cacti) that live in deserts and can handle a lot of salt. They are very halotolerant. They have adaptations that help them deal with salt, such as being able to store water in their stems, or having special cells that can pump out excess salt.

Animals can also be halotolerant or not. Some fish, like goldfish, can live in water with a lot of salt. Other fish, like freshwater fish, would get sick in that same water.

So, halotolerance really just means how well something can handle salt. Some things can handle a lot, and some things can't.
