ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Soil salinity

Soil is the ground we walk on and where plants grow. Sometimes, there can be too much salt in the soil, which can make it hard for plants to grow.

Salt is something that tastes good on fries, but too much salt in the soil can be a big problem. It's like having too much sugar in your cereal - it doesn't taste good anymore.

When there's too much salt in the soil, it can be hard for plants to take up water. This is because salt makes the water stick to it, so the plants can't drink it. Just like trying to drink a drink through a straw with a lid on it - the water can't get through.

When plants can't drink enough water, they can get really thirsty and start to wilt. This means they look like they are melting and are not growing as well as they should.

Farmers have to be careful how much salt they put on the soil, and they have to make sure the plants get enough water to drink. If the soil gets too salty, they can try to wash it out with lots of water, but it can be hard to fix.
