ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hans Island

Hans Island is a small piece of land that sits between Canada and Denmark, in the Arctic Ocean. Imagine it like you and your friend both want to play with a toy, but neither of you want to share it. Hans Island is the toy and Canada and Denmark are the friends.

Hans Island has no trees, buildings, or people living there, so it is technically uninhabited. However, Canada and Denmark both claim ownership over the island. This means that they both believe that the toy (Hans Island) belongs to them.

The dispute between Canada and Denmark over Hans Island has been going on for many years. Sometimes, it becomes a bit of a game between the two countries. Canadian soldiers will go and plant their flag on the island and leave a bottle of Canadian whiskey. Then, Danish soldiers will go and remove the Canadian flag, replace it with the Danish flag, and leave a bottle of Danish Schnapps. They do this to show that they still believe the island belongs to them.

Despite this friendly back and forth, Canada and Denmark have both agreed to disagree and have placed the issue of Hans Island on hold. It is unclear what will happen to the island in the future, but for now, it remains the toy that both friends want to play with but cannot agree on who it belongs to.
