ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

High-nutrient, low-chlorophyll regions

Okay kiddo, imagine you're in a sea of green plants. But some parts of the sea have fewer green plants than others. In those areas, there are still lots of tiny things, like plankton, but there aren't as many big plants around.

Now, these big plants need something called chlorophyll to grow. It's like their food. But in the areas with fewer big plants, there's not as much chlorophyll around.

The good news is that there are still lots of other things in the water for the little things to eat. And those little things are really important because they're eaten by bigger animals, like fish and whales.

So, even though there might not be as many big plants in those areas, there's still plenty of food for other creatures to thrive. And scientists call those places with fewer big plants but lots of creatures "high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll regions."
