Higher criticism

Higher Criticism is a method of studying an ancient document or text to determine whether it is reliable or not. To do this, scholars look at the text to analyze its language, style, authorship, and other kinds of evidence to help them decide if the author of the document is the same person who is being described in it. They may also look at the context of when the document was written and its purpose. By looking at this evidence, they can decide whether the document can be trusted or not.
