ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Historical trauma

Historical trauma is when people have been hurt and/or scared by painful events that happened in the past and can be passed down from generation to generation. It’s like passing on a memory of a bad experience that can make people feel sad, angry, scared and hopeless. Examples of historical trauma are when a group of people are treated differently, like they are not the same as others, or when someone is hurt and doesn’t feel safe. An example of this is when Native Americans were taken away from their families and their homes and forced to go to Reservations where they faced hard conditions and unfair treatment. The memory of this is still with them and their families, even though it happened many years ago.
