ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of colonialism

Colonialism is when one country takes control of another country, usually for a long period of time. In many cases, the country that takes over is more powerful than the one being taken over. For example, in the past some European countries took over countries in Africa, South America and Asia. These countries were often weaker and were ruled by the European countries. This caused many problems because the European countries changed the laws and rules in the countries they took over, and this often caused harm to those who were living in the countries they took over. They also took land, resources and benefits that belonged to the people who lived there. This was very unfair and sometimes led to violence. Colonialism has been around for hundreds of years, and it still continues today in some parts of the world.
