ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of communication

Hey kiddo, do you know what communication means? It’s how people talk to each other and share information. And do you know that talking or sharing information has been happening for a long, long time?

In the very beginning, there were no phones, no computers, and no internet. People communicated by making sounds with their mouths, like grunting, shouting, and singing. They also used body language, like waving their arms or making facial expressions to show what they meant. That's called verbal and nonverbal communication.

But then, people started to create symbols that helped them to communicate. They used pictures to represent things, like animals, plants, and objects. These pictures turned into hieroglyphics, the ancient Egyptian writing system. Hieroglyphics helped people to tell stories and keep records.

As time went on, people developed different writing systems. The first one was cuneiform which was developed by the ancient Mesopotamians. Then they developed an alphabet, which made it easier to write words and sentences.

Fast forward to the middle ages, and people started to use paper to write their messages. They sent letters and manuscripts from one place to another using messengers.

Then in the 1800s, people invented the telegraph. Wow, this was a big deal! It was like magic! The telegraph used electrical signals to send messages instantly over long distances. So someone in New York could send a message to someone in London in just seconds.

In the 1900s, the telephone was invented, and this changed everything. People could now talk to each other in real-time over long distances. And then came the radio and television, which enabled people to send and receive information for entertainment and education.

Finally, in the late 1900s and early 2000s, the internet was created, and this changed the way we communicate once again. With email, messenger, social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, video conferencing, people can communicate with each other anytime, anywhere in the world. You can even talk to someone on the other side of the planet using video chat from your home.

So you see, kiddo, communication has been happening for a very long time, and it has evolved a lot throughout history. From making sounds with our mouths to telegraph, telephone, television to the internet, we have invented lots of different ways to talk to each other and share information. Who knows what will come next!
