ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Honorary consul

An honorary consul is like a pretend diplomat who helps people from one country when they are visiting another country. Imagine you are playing pretend with your friends and you decide that one of your friends will be the president of your pretend country. That friend might choose another friend to be their honorary consul, which means that friend will help other people from your pretend country when they come to visit your play area.

In the real world, countries also have honorary consuls. They are usually chosen because they know a lot about the country they are representing and they already have an important job like a business owner or a lawyer. Honorary consuls don't get paid by their government, but they might do things like help people get visas to visit their country. They might also help with any problems that come up like if someone from their country gets arrested or loses their passport.

So, an honorary consul is like a special helper who represents a country and helps people from that country when they are away from home.
