ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Horseshoe theory

Horseshoe theory is a way of thinking about different political beliefs. It says that very different beliefs are actually closer than they appear. On a horseshoe, the two ends curve around and meet in the middle. In the same way, the two extremes of politics – like extreme liberals and extreme conservatives – have some things in common. They both value strong leaders and strong governments, for example. So even when it seems like two people have nothing in common politically, they may actually agree on some things.
