ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

House negro

Okay, so back in a long, long time ago in America, there were some people called slaves. These slaves were people who were forced to work very hard for no pay and had no choice about it. Some of the slaves worked in the big house where their owners (or "masters") lived, and they were called house slaves.

Now, some house slaves were treated a little better than the slaves who had to work in the fields. They had nicer clothes and maybe got to eat better food. But even though they lived in the big house, they were still slaves and had to work really hard for their masters.

Some people use the term "house negro" today to describe someone who they believe is too loyal to people in power, even if it hurts the rest of their group. But it is a very hurtful term with a very painful history. We should always try to respect and support all people, no matter their background or situation.
