ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hymn tune

Ok, so imagine you want to sing a song. But you don't know what tune (or melody) to sing it to. A hymn tune is like a special melody that goes with a specific song, usually a religious song that people sing in church.

It's kind of like if you were coloring a picture. You have to choose which colors to use, right? Well, when people write hymns (which are usually poems or religious verses), they also have to choose which tune to use.

Fun fact: Did you know that some hymn tunes were written hundreds of years ago, but people still sing them today?

So, whenever people want to sing that particular hymn, they will use the same melody or tune that was chosen for it. And if enough people sing that hymn with the same tune, it becomes famous and people recognize it right away, like how you might recognize certain songs on the radio.
