Iceberg

An iceberg is a huge piece of ice that floats in the sea. It's like a giant frozen mountain with most of it hidden under the water. Imagine if you dropped a toy in a bathtub with some ice cubes. The ice cubes are floating on the water, right? But if you push them down gently, you realize that most of the ice cube is hiding under the surface. That's what it's like with an iceberg! Most of it is hidden under the water, but you only see the part sticking out.

Icebergs are formed when chunks of ice break off from glaciers or ice shelves that are near an ocean. This can happen when it's warm enough to melt the ice a bit, or when the ice gets too heavy and cracks off. Then, these big chunks of ice float away with ocean currents.

The part of the iceberg that you can see above the water is called the "tip" or "crest". This can be really big - sometimes over 200 feet tall! But that's only a small part of the whole iceberg. Scientists estimate that only about 10% of an iceberg is visible above the water's surface.

Icebergs can be very dangerous for ships and boats because they can be hard to spot in the water. Sometimes, ships will use special equipment to detect icebergs ahead of time so that they can avoid them. But sometimes, they can't avoid them and collide, which can cause big problems. That's why icebergs are taken really seriously by oceanographers and sailors alike.
