Okay, so imagine you have a really big straw and you want to see what's at the bottom of a really deep drink. Well, Iceland wanted to do something kind of like that, but instead of a drink, they wanted to drill really deep into the ground to see what's there.
They set up a big machine called a drilling rig and started digging a hole. And when I say "deep," I mean really, really deep. They wanted to go all the way down to where the Earth's crust is really hot, which is about 10 kilometers deep!
Now, you might be wondering why anyone would want to do this. Well, Iceland is a really interesting place geologically, which means they have a lot of volcanoes and earthquakes. By drilling down into the Earth, scientists hope to learn more about how these things happen and maybe even find new sources of energy deep underground.
But it's not easy to drill that deep. The drilling rig has to be incredibly powerful, and they have to use some special tricks to keep the drill bit from getting too hot and breaking. And when they finally reach the bottom, it's like exploring a whole new world down there.
So, that's why Iceland started the deep drilling project—to explore and learn more about our planet.
