Ilustrado

An ilustrado is someone who lived in the Philippines a long time ago and was very smart and educated. They were often wealthy and had gone to school in Europe or America to learn lots of things about science, art, and culture. They would learn about new ideas, like democracy and independence, and then come back to the Philippines to share what they learned with others. They wanted to use their knowledge to help make the Philippines a better place.
