ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Immersion (mathematics)

Okay kiddo, have you ever gone swimming? When you are in the water, everything around you is quiet and you can only hear the sound of your own breath. That's a little bit like what immersion means in math.

When you are learning about math, immersion means that you are surrounded by math all the time. You are working on math problems and talking about math with your teacher, your classmates, and your family. You might even dream about math!

This helps you learn math better because you are always thinking about it, just like when you are in the water you are always aware of how it feels around you.

When you are immersed in math, you get really good at it because your brain is always working on it, like a muscle that gets stronger the more you use it. And just like how you get more comfortable swimming the more you practice, you become more comfortable with math the more you are involved in it.

So, immersion in math means being completely surrounded by math all the time, and it helps you get really good at math by constantly exercising your brain.
