Indentured servitude

Have you ever heard of a grown-up being asked to work for a long time to pay off a big debt? That's what some people call indentured servitude.

Imagine you try to borrow some money from someone and you promise to pay them back with interest. But sometimes, people couldn't pay back the money they borrowed because the debt was too big.

In this situation, people sometimes gave up their services to work for the lender without getting paid until they can pay back the money they borrowed. This was an agreement where the person who borrowed the money would work for the lender until they paid back what they owed.

For example, someone could work as a servant for seven years to pay back the money they borrowed from a rich person. During their time as a servant, they were given food, clothes, and a place to sleep. But they didn't get paid money for their work, they just worked to pay off the debt.

Indentured servitude was a way for people to pay off their debt by working instead of using money. It was used in many places throughout history, especially during the colonial era when people were settling in America.
