ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Independent city (United States)

An independent city is kind of like a city that doesn’t have a big boss like other cities do. In some parts of the United States, cities are run by people who are in charge of the whole area, called a county. But in an independent city, the city is its own county boss. So it’s like a big city is also a little boss! Just like how a kid might be in charge of their own toy, but not have to listen to their big brother or sister telling them what to do with it.

This means that an independent city has its own government and laws that only apply to that city. They don’t have to follow the rules of a bigger boss like other cities in a county do. They have their own mayor, city council, and people who make decisions for the city.

Some famous independent cities in the United States include Baltimore, Maryland and St. Louis, Missouri.
