Indigenous Protected Area

An Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) is a special area that is owned or managed by Indigenous peoples (like First Nations, Inuit or Métis). It is a way for Indigenous people to look after the land and water, plants and animals, and the cultural values that it holds. IPAs provide traditional knowledge and stewardship of the land and its resources the opportunity to be shared for the betterment of all.
