ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Internalized homophobia

Internalized homophobia is when someone who is gay, lesbian or bisexual, doesn't feel good about themselves because of their sexual orientation. Imagine you really like a certain color, but everyone around you says that color is bad and you start to believe it. You might feel bad for liking that color even though there's nothing wrong with it. This is sort of what happens with someone who is gay, lesbian or bisexual. They may hear a lot of negative messages about being LGBTQ+ and start to believe that there is something bad or wrong about them. This can make them feel ashamed or embarrassed of themselves, and it can affect how they act or the choices they make. It's important to remember that being LGBTQ+ is normal and there's nothing wrong with it. People should be accepted and loved no matter who they love or who they are.
