ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Irregular galaxy

An irregular galaxy is like a big group of stars that doesn't have a specific shape or pattern. It's kind of like a blob or a cloud in the sky.

When scientists look up at the night sky, they see all different kinds of galaxies. Some galaxies are shaped like spirals, some are round, and some are shaped like eggs. But irregular galaxies don't fit into any of those categories. They're like the wild card of galaxies!

Inside an irregular galaxy, there are lots of stars and dust and gas. Sometimes, all of these things come together to make new stars. But because irregular galaxies don't have a specific shape or structure, their stars don't always follow the same patterns.

Irregular galaxies are really interesting to scientists because they can tell us a lot about how galaxies form and evolve over time. Even though they look different from other types of galaxies, they still play an important role in the universe.
