ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Isolated system

Okay kiddo, do you know what a system means? It's like a group of things or objects that work together. Now, an isolated system is a special kind of system that is completely closed off from anything else outside of it. That means nothing can go in or out of this system.

For example, imagine a snow globe. You know, the one with the little house and snowflakes inside? That's a small isolated system. It has air and water trapped inside and nothing can get in or out.

Similarly, let's say you put a toy car inside a jar and seal the lid tight. That toy car is now in an isolated system because nothing can get in or out.

Now why is this important? This type of system is used by scientists to study things because it’s easier to control what goes on inside the system. Scientists can change things about the system while knowing nothing from outside the system will affect the experiment.

So that's the isolated system, a big word for a simple idea: a completely closed off system where nothing can come in or out.
