ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

James Laver

So imagine James Laver is like your great-grandfather who lived a really long time ago and he was very interested in the clothing people wore. He wanted to understand why people wore different clothes at different times.

He learned that the way people dressed was influenced by the things happening in their world, like wars or new technologies. For example, when cars were invented, people started wearing simpler, more comfortable clothes that were easier to move in.

James Laver also noticed that people looked back at older times and borrowed ideas for their own clothing. Like how some people today might wear clothes that are inspired by what people wore in the 1920s or the 1960s.

So James Laver studied all of this and wrote books and articles about the history of fashion. He wanted people to understand why we wear what we wear and how it reflects what is happening in our world.
