ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Junk raft

Okay, imagine you are playing in a bathtub or a pool and you have a bunch of random toys and objects with you. Maybe some rubber ducks, a toy boat, a plastic cup, and some foam letters. Now, imagine you wanted to use all of these objects to build a big raft that you could sit on and float around on the water. That's kind of like what someone did with the junk raft!

Instead of toys, this person used things like plastic bottles, old drums, and even a toilet seat to build a big raft in the ocean. They did this because they wanted to show people that there is a lot of trash and pollution in the ocean that can be harmful to animals and the environment.

So, the person found all of these things that people had thrown away or left behind, and they tied them all together to make a giant floating platform. They even put a little house on top so they could live on it for a while!

The idea was to travel from California all the way to Hawaii on this junk raft, and along the way, they would collect data on the trash and pollution they saw in the ocean. They wanted to help people understand the impact of their waste and inspire them to make changes that could help the planet.

So, in a way, the junk raft was like a big science experiment and a way to raise awareness about the environment. It showed that even something that people thought was as useless and disposable as junk, could be turned into something valuable and meaningful.
