ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kōtoku-in

Kōtoku-in is a very special place in Japan where there is a big statue of a very peaceful and wise man named Buddha. It is a very calm and quiet place where people can come and pray, meditate or just admire the beautiful statue.

This statue is really, really big – it’s as tall as a three-story building! It is made of bronze, which is a special metal that is really hard and lasts a very long time. The statue weighs over 100 tons, which is like the weight of 50 cars!

The big statue has a very important meaning. It represents Buddha, who was a teacher and philosopher who lived a long, long time ago in a place called India. People who follow his teachings believe that he taught very important things that can help us be happier and kinder to each other.

At Kōtoku-in, people can give offerings to Buddha as a sign of respect and gratitude. They may leave flowers, fruit, or some money to help take care of the temple. They can also light incense or say prayers to show their devotion.

Many people visit Kōtoku-in every year from all over the world, not only to see the statue but also to feel a sense of peace and calm that it brings. It’s a really special place that reminds people to be kind and peaceful towards one another.
