Khrushchyovka

Have you ever heard of a building called Khrushchyovka? Khrushchyovka was a kind of building in Russia that was built a very long time ago.

In the 1950s and 1960s, people in Russia needed more housing because many families were living in very small apartments or sharing rooms with other families. So, the government started building new apartment buildings which were called Khrushchyovka in honor of Nikita Khrushchev, who was the leader of the Soviet Union at that time.

Khrushchyovka buildings were made of concrete panels, which means that they were built by joining together big pieces of concrete. The buildings were made to be very tall so that they could fit many apartments inside.

However, Khrushchyovka buildings were not very good for people to live in because the walls were very thin and the apartments were small. They didn't have a lot of windows or natural light, and they weren't very safe either because they were not earthquake-resistant.

Over time, people in Russia began to realize the problems with Khrushchyovka buildings, and many of them were torn down to make way for newer and better housing.
