ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lame duck (politics)

Okay kiddo, so imagine you're playing a game with your friends and you know that you're going to have to leave soon. You might start to feel a little bit like a "lame duck". That means that even if you still have some time left in the game, you might not be able to make any big decisions or really do much that will affect the outcome of the game because you know you'll be leaving soon.

In politics, a "lame duck" is someone who is still in office but has either lost an election or is getting ready to retire. Just like in our game example, this means that they might not be able to do very much that will really impact the way things are going in the government. Other politicians might not take them as seriously because they know that they're leaving soon.

Sometimes this can cause problems if there are important things that need to be done before the person leaves office. Since they might not be able to get much done themselves, they might try to pass on some of their power or influence to someone else who is staying in office. This can make things a bit confusing or unpredictable because it's not really clear who is in charge.

Overall, being a "lame duck" in politics is kind of like being a short-timer in a game – you're still there, but you don't have as much of an impact on what's happening as you used to.
