Last of the Romans

Okay kiddo, so do you know what the "Romans" were? They were people who lived a very long time ago in a place called the Roman Empire. They had a big army and conquered lots of other places around them.

Now, the "last of the Romans" means the very last person who was a Roman. You see, after a long time of being a big, strong empire, the Roman Empire started to fall apart. There were lots of reasons why this happened, like bad leaders and problems with money.

But eventually, the Roman Empire broke into smaller pieces, and the people who lived in those places didn't really consider themselves Romans anymore. So the "last of the Romans" would have been someone who lived during that time when the Roman Empire was starting to break up, and they were one of the very last people who still thought of themselves as Roman. It's kind of like being the last person in your family to have a certain last name - eventually, everyone else changes their names or gets married and has different last names, and you're the only one left with that original name.

So that's what "last of the Romans" means - someone who lived a long time ago and was one of the very last people to call themselves a Roman.
