ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Launch escape system

A spaceship is like a big truck that drives you to space. But sometimes, something goes wrong and the truck needs to stop quickly to keep the astronauts safe. That's where the launch escape system comes in!

The launch escape system is like a safety button for the spaceship. It's located at the very top of the spaceship, on the part that is called the capsule. This is where the astronauts sit during the launch.

If something goes wrong during the launch, like an explosion or a fire, the launch escape system will activate. It's like a giant rocket that shoots the capsule away from the rest of the spaceship. This happens very quickly, almost in the blink of an eye!

Once the capsule is safely away from the spaceship, it will fall back down to Earth. But don't worry, it's designed to keep the astronauts safe even during this part! There's a big parachute on top of the capsule that opens up and slows it down. It's like an umbrella that helps you fall more slowly.

So, in short, the launch escape system is a safety feature that helps keep astronauts safe if something goes wrong during the launch. It's a rocket that shoots the capsule away from the spaceship and a big parachute that helps it land safely.
