ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Leadership style

A leadership style is like how a grown-up decides to be a leader. You know how a teacher might teach you in different ways? They might speak loudly to get your attention or be very patient and soft when explaining something. Well, grown-ups who are leaders do the same thing when they lead other grown-ups.

Some leaders really like to tell people what to do and how to do it, and they don't usually ask for other people's opinions. This style is called autocratic, and it's like when your parents tell you to clean your room, and you don't have a say in it. Some grown-ups like to be very friendly and give people freedom to do whatever they want, and this style is called laissez-faire, which is a bit like when your babysitter lets you watch TV and eat candy all day.

Then there are leaders who like to ask for people's ideas and opinions before making a decision, and they try to make sure everyone on their team or in their group feels included. This style is called democratic, and it's a bit like when you and your friends decide which game to play together. Finally, some leaders combine all of these styles, depending on the situation they're in.

So, just like your teachers might use different ways of teaching you, grown-up leaders have different ways of leading their teams, and they choose the style that they think will help them get the best results.
