ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lei Áurea

The Lei Áurea ("Golden Law") was a law passed in Brazil in 1888 that ended slavery in the country. Before this law, many people, especially people with black or African skin, were forced to work for free for their "owners" and could not make decisions for themselves. But once the Lei Áurea was passed, slavery was officially against the law, meaning that everyone was free and allowed to do things like work and vote, no matter what their skin color. Everyone was treated equally, and the law was like a big celebration!
