ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lipofuscin

Lipofuscin is like a little garbage pile that gathers up in your cells as you get older. Imagine your room getting messier and messier as you don't clean it up. Lipofuscin is made up of all kinds of things that the cell doesn't need anymore, like old pieces of proteins and parts of cells that have been used up. Because the cell can't get rid of all this garbage, it just keeps adding to the pile over time. Think of it like crumbs on a table that keep getting bigger and bigger as you eat more and more. Unlike other kinds of waste, though, lipofuscin doesn't get broken down or recycled by the cell. This can cause problems because the lipofuscin pile can get so big that it starts to interfere with normal cell function. It's like trying to do your homework with a big mess on your desk that you can't move. Your desk is blocked and you can't work effectively. Scientists are studying lipofuscin to find ways to clean it up and help cells work better as we age. They want to help us live healthier lives for longer.
