Local-express lanes

Imagine you are playing with your toy cars on a big road with two or more lanes. You can drive your cars on any lane you want, but sometimes some lanes are faster than others because there are fewer cars or there are no big trucks or buses. The same thing happens in real life for cars and trucks on highways.

The regular streets are like the local lanes of the highway, and the highway is like the express lanes.
