ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lollard

Okay buddy, have you ever heard of the word Lollard? No? Well, it was a nickname given to some people in England a long, long time ago, about 600 years ago!

So, these people didn't really like the way the church was running things. They had some different ideas about how people should practice their religion. They thought that people should be able to read and interpret the Bible for themselves, instead of just listening to what the church leaders said the Bible meant.

But the church leaders didn't like that! They thought that people needed them to explain the Bible, and they didn't like anyone disagreeing with them. So they started calling these people "Lollards," which basically meant that they were troublemakers, and they were teaching things that were incorrect.

Even though the church leaders didn't like the Lollards, a lot of regular people did! They liked the idea of being able to read and understand the Bible for themselves. And even though the Lollards sometimes got into trouble with the law because the church leaders didn't like what they were saying, their ideas eventually spread and helped to bring about changes in the church.

So, that's what a Lollard was! A group of people in England a long time ago who had some different ideas about religion than the church leaders did, and who wanted to be able to read and interpret the Bible in their own way.
