ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Loss of rights due to felony conviction

When someone commits a crime that is considered serious enough, they can be charged with a felony. A felony is a crime that can be punished by more than a year in jail or prison. When someone is convicted of a felony, it means that a judge or jury found them guilty of a serious crime.

Because felonies are usually associated with more serious crimes, people who commit them will sometimes lose some of their rights. This means that they might not be allowed to do some things that other people can do. For example, they might not be allowed to vote in elections or own a gun. They might also have trouble getting certain jobs.
