ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lyman series

Ok kiddo, so you know how everything in the universe is made up of tiny particles called atoms, right? And these atoms have different parts to them, like a nucleus in the middle and electrons orbiting around it.

Now, sometimes these electrons move from one orbit to another, kind of like jumping on a trampoline. And when they do that, they release a little bit of energy.

The Lyman series is a special group of these energy releases that happen in hydrogen atoms. When an electron in a hydrogen atom jumps from a higher orbit to the first orbit, it releases a lot of energy. This energy is in the form of light, and it's called ultraviolet radiation.

Scientists have studied this ultraviolet light and have noticed that it has a specific pattern of wavelengths. This pattern is called the Lyman series. It's like if you were to sleep on a giant trampoline and dream about jumping, but you always jump to specific heights and your mom can name them in order.

The Lyman series is important because it helps scientists better understand the behavior of atoms and the energy they release. Plus, it's really cool to think about tiny particles jumping around and creating light!
