ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Macro diversity

Okay, imagine you have a bunch of toys to play with. You have a toy car, a toy dinosaur, a toy ball, and a toy robot. Now, you may really like playing with the toy car and you could spend all your time playing with just that one toy. But what if you lose the toy car, or it breaks? Then you would be sad and not have anything to play with.

This is kind of how macro diversity works, but with things like cell phone signals instead of toys. When you use your phone, it gets signals from nearby cell towers to help you get connected to the internet or make a call. Just like having only one toy to play with, relying on just one cell tower to connect to the internet or make a call means that if something happens to that tower (like it breaks or gets crowded with too many people using it at the same time), you might not be able to use your phone.

That's where macro diversity comes in. Just like having more toys to play with means you won't be sad if one breaks, having more cell towers to connect to means if one breaks or gets too crowded, you can still use your phone. Instead of relying on just one toy (or cell tower), macro diversity gives you lots of different toys (cell towers) to choose from so you can always stay connected.
