Mail and plate armour

Okay kiddo, you know how knights wear shiny metal clothes to protect themselves in battles? That special metal clothes is called plate armor. Now, when knights needed to send important letters or messages to other people far away, they would use the mail system. No, not the email you know! This is the old-timey mail where real people would carry written letters to the recipient.

So, what’s the connection between mail and plate armor, you may ask? Well, the people who carried those letters needed to be protected from getting hurt or injured just like the knights. That’s why they also wore armor made of small metal rings called chain mail. Like how a blanket is made of millions of tiny threads, a chain mail is made of lots of small metal rings linked together in a pattern.

This chain mail armor would cover the person’s entire body and protect them from arrows and swords. Sometimes, the mail armor was even worn under the plate armor to give an extra layer of protection.

So, when you see knights in pictures wearing fancy armor, remember that the people who helped send their letters and messages wore armor too – just a different kind!
