ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Marry-your-rapist law

So, you know how when someone gets married, they usually do it because they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together?

Well, sadly, in some places, there are laws that say if someone rapes a girl, which means doing something really bad to her body, like touching her in places they shouldn't or having sex with her when she doesn't want to, that person can then ask to marry her. And if she says yes, they can get married even though the person did something really bad to her.

The idea behind this law is that if a man rapes a girl, he can then make it better by marrying her, and everything will be okay. But in reality, it's not okay at all. It's not fair to the girl who was raped because she didn't want to marry the person who hurt her.

This law can trap girls into marrying their rapist and force them to be with someone who hurt them. That's why many people say this law is very wrong and unfair, and it should be changed. Everyone deserves to be respected and not forced to marry someone they don't want to be with.
