ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Massive array of idle disks

So imagine you have a lot of toy cars that you don't play with all the time- they just sit on a shelf or in a box. You might think that since they're not moving, they're not doing anything useful. But imagine if you had a hundred or a thousand of those toy cars, all in their own little spaces. That's kind of like what a massive array of idle disks is.

This array is made up of a bunch of hard drives, kind of like the memory of a computer. But instead of just one or two, it's a whole bunch- sometimes hundreds or even thousands of them. And they're not doing anything at the moment- they're just sitting there, waiting for someone to ask for some information.

But even though they're not active right now, they're still useful. That's because they can store a LOT of information- way more than just one or two hard drives. And sometimes, when you need a lot of data at once, it's faster to get it from a bunch of idle disks than from just one or two active ones.

It's kind of like having a big toy chest that you don't play with all the time, but when you need to find something specific, you know that you can go there and find it because it's got so much stuff in it. And even though they're not all out and being played with, they're still part of your toy collection, and they're still important!
