Matrix of domination

Matrix of domination is a way of thinking about power and inequality in society. Think of it like a big grid with different layers or axes, like race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and more.

For example, let's say there's a white man who is wealthy and able-bodied. On the matrix of domination, he would have multiple axes of privilege and power: he benefits from the structures and systems that privilege whiteness, maleness, wealth, and able-bodiedness.

On the flip side, there are people who are situated at the intersections of multiple axes of oppression. For instance, a disabled Black trans woman who is poor might experience discrimination and oppression related to her race, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, and ability.

The matrix of domination helps us understand that power and inequality in society are not one-dimensional. Rather, they are complex and interconnected, and they shape our experiences and opportunities in ways that can be difficult to fully grasp.
