ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Media preservation

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a really old movie or heard a really old song that your parents or grandparents like? Well, media preservation is all about making sure that those movies and songs can still be enjoyed by people even if they were made a long time ago.

You see, when movies or songs are made, they are usually stored on special things like tapes or film strips so that people can watch or listen to them later. But over time, those tapes and film strips can get old and start to break down. And if nobody takes care of them, they might get lost or damaged forever.

That's where media preservation comes in. It's like a special superhero team that works to save those old movies and songs from being lost forever. They use special tools and techniques to make copies of the tapes or film strips, or transfer them onto new, more sturdy storage formats like digital files.

They also work really hard to make sure that the movies and songs still look and sound just like they did when they were first made, even if they were made a long, long time ago. That way, people like you and me can still enjoy them and learn about the world and the people who lived before us.
