Mediation is a way of solving problems without having to go to court. It is like talking to someone to help you work out a solution. It is usually done with two people with a problem (like a disagreement between two neighbours) sitting in the same room, and a mediator, who is like a referee helping them to talk through their problem, and come up with an agreement that they both like. The mediator will suggest ways to solve the problem but cannot make any decisions for the two people; they need to agree on the solution themselves. Mediation is an effective way to find a solution that everyone can be happy with, and it is far less expensive and time-consuming than making the decision in court.
