Metadata standards are like labels for information. Just like how you put labels on your toys or clothes so you know what they are, metadata is a label for information so we know what it is about.
For example, let's say you have a picture of your cat. The metadata might say things like:
- Who took the picture (you)
- When the picture was taken (last week)
- Where the picture was taken (in your backyard)
- What the picture is of (your cat)
By having these labels, it makes it easy for other people to find your picture if they are looking for pictures of cats taken in backyards last week.
Metadata standards make sure that everyone uses the same labels for the same types of information. Just like how we all use the same word for a type of fruit, metadata standards make sure we all use the same labels for things like names, dates, and locations. This makes it easy for people to find and use information, no matter where it came from or who made it.
