ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Microbial metabolism

Okay kiddo, let me explain microbial metabolism to you like you’re five!

First of all, what do you know about microbes? They’re tiny living things that we can’t see with our eyes, right? That’s correct! And these microbes need to eat food just like we do to survive.

However, the way microbes eat and turn food into energy is different from the way we do it. This process is called metabolism.

To make things simple, let's use a cookie as an example. When we eat a cookie, our body uses enzymes to break down the cookie into sugar, which our cells use for energy. Microbes work in a similar way, but instead of using enzymes, they use different chemicals to turn food into energy.

Now imagine that the cookie is made up of different parts, like chocolate chips, nuts, and flour. Each of these parts is made up of smaller building blocks called molecules. When microbes eat the cookie, they break it down into these smaller molecules.

These molecules then go through different chemical reactions in the microbe’s cells, which release energy. The microbe uses this energy to do things like move around, grow, and reproduce.

There are different types of microbes, and each one has its own unique way of breaking down food and turning it into energy. Some microbes can even use things like sunlight or chemicals for energy, instead of food!

So to sum it up, microbial metabolism is all about how tiny living things break down food or other substances to produce energy that they use to survive, grow and reproduce.

I hope that helps you better understand microbial metabolism, kiddo!
