When we dig a hole in the ground to get minerals like gold and silver, we have to take out a lot of dirt and rocks that don't have those minerals. This extra dirt and rocks are called mine tailings.
Think of it like making a cake. We mix ingredients like flour, sugar, and eggs together to make the cake. But we also create a lot of crumbs and scraps that we don't need to make the cake. These crumbs and scraps are like mine tailings - we don't need them after we've gotten what we want.
The problem with mine tailings is that they can be harmful to the environment. Sometimes they contain chemicals and metals that can leak into nearby water sources and soil. This can make it hard for plants and animals to survive and can even make people sick if they drink the contaminated water.
But we can try to reduce the harm caused by mine tailings. We can build special facilities called tailings ponds to store them safely. We can also treat the tailings to remove some of the harmful materials before storing them. By doing this, we can protect the environment and the people who live nearby.
