Mortgage discrimination is when someone gets treated differently because of their race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or family status when they are trying to buy a house. For example, if someone of a certain race is not allowed to buy a house or is charged more or different fees than someone of a different race, that is called mortgage discrimination. Mortgage discrimination can happen when someone applies for a loan to buy a house, when someone is charged a fee for loan servicing or for an appraisal, or when someone is refused a loan altogether.
